Animal Behaviour: Feeding the Superorganism
نویسنده
چکیده
Insect societies are often described as superorganisms, and there are many functional parallels between organisms and superorganisms. Elegant work using ants shows that nutrient regulation, which occurs in many non-social animals, can also occur at the colony-level.

Effects of Feeding Buckets Number Per Pen on Performance and Behaviour Indicators of Lambs
Twenty-four 35-day-old lambs were distributed to a completely randomized design with 3 treatments to study the effects of number of feeding buckets per pen on performance, haematology and behaviour indicators. Treatments consisted of 8 (T1), 4 (T2) or 2 (T3) feeding buckets/pen (8 lambs/pen). During the experiment, concentrate was fed at 08:30 in individual feeders. Daily dry matter intake (DMI...
متن کاملSocial Behaviour and the Superorganism: Implications for Disease and Stability in Complex Animal Societies and Colony Collapse Disorder in Honeybees
Sociability, mass response to threat, food production and food sharing and an adaptable communication system are a suite of traits involved in the evolution of complex society in animals. Cycles of interaction characterize members of such societies and those of species in association that can affect disease structure in time and virulence. Colony Collapse Disorder (in North America, Honey Bee D...
متن کاملEffects of Fat Supplementation and Chop Length on Milk Composition and Ruminal Fermentation of Cows Fed Diets Containing Alfalfa Silage
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fat supplementation for enhancing milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in early lactation without affecting ruminal fermentation. 24 Holstein dairy cows were assigned to a completely randomized design employing a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement. Factors were particle size (15 and 25 mm) and two different sources of alfalfa supplemented with and wit...
متن کاملObservational Notes on Short-Lived and Infrequent Behaviors Displayed by Reticulitermes flavipes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)
Behaviors displayed by worker termites, which make up 80Ð90% of any eastern subterranean termite population, provide the foundation for understanding the details of termite social organization. Individually marked termite workers were placed in an enclosed, darkened arena and videotaped for three 24-h periods. Behaviors observed in detail include ecdysial assistance, gallery excavation, oscilla...
متن کاملThreat assessment by domestic ducklings using visual signals: implications for animal-machine interactions.
There are increasing opportunities for robots to work amongst animals in agricultural systems. One potential application is in herding animals prior to catching or transportation. An effective herding robot must be able to interrupt ongoing animal behaviour without causing panic or flight reactions. The extent to which different approaching stimuli interrupted the feeding behaviour of pairs of ...
